Udaipur - The Lake City

After Akbar conquered Chittor in 1568, Rana Udai Singh constructed Udaipur, which served as the capital of Mewar. Called ‘the beautiful city of lakes, Udaipur, is surrounded by azure waters and is encircled by the verdant Aravalis hills. The Fateh Sagar Lake, Lake Pichhola, and the smaller Swaroop Sagar Lake are three beautifully interconnected lagoons, besides forts, palaces, temples, gardens, mountains, and winding alleyways lined with booths that bring back memories of chivalry and bravery from a bygone era.

There's a lot to see and enjoy today as you visit some of the best locales in Udaipur.

Maharana Pratap Smarak: One of the finest tributes Maharana Bhagwat Singh made to Maharana Pratap was this Memorial, which was constructed in the 18th century. The Memorial's life-size bronze monument of Maharana Pratap riding his loyal steed, Chetak, is one of its most exciting attractions. The sculpture is 11 feet tall and weighs around 70 tonnes.

Udaipur City Palace: One of Rajasthan's architectural wonders, Udaipur City Palace is situated serenely on the shores of Lake Pichola. Revered as the most popular tourist destination in Udaipur, the stately City Palace is frequently referred to as the biggest palace complex in Rajasthan. The structure boasts an exquisite fusion of Chinese, European, and mediaeval architecture. The Palace includes a variety of towers, domes, and arches that add to the charm of this historic location.

Jag Mandir: A palace called Jag Mandir was constructed on an island in Lake Pichola, which also goes by the name "Lake Garden Palace." Three Sisodia Rajput Maharanas of the Mewar kingdom are credited with starting its construction, which began in 1551 under Maharana Amar Singh, progressed with Maharana Karan Singh (1620–1628) and finally completed by Maharana Jagat Singh I. (1628–1652). In honour of the last Maharana Jagat Singh, it is known as "Jagat Mandir."

Bagore ki Haweli: Bagore ki Haveli is located in Gangori Ghat, just on Lake Pichola's shore. It was constructed in the eighteenth century by Mewar's Prime Minister, Amar Chand Badwa. The Palace features more than a hundred rooms that display modern art and costume exhibits, with the interiors adorned by Haveli-made glass and mirrorwork. It also preserves an example of Mewar painting on the walls of the Queen's Chamber.

Chittorgarh Fort: The Chittorgarh Fort is revered as a representation of Rajput valour, bravery, and resistance. It lies 175 kilometres to the east of Udaipur, and is named after Chitrangada Mori, the person who constructed it. The 180-metre-high hill that houses one of the largest forts rises from the banks of the river Berach.

Rana Kumbha Palace: The ruins of the Rana Kumbha palace is situated right outside Chittorgarh Fort. At one time, it is said to have contained a Diwan -e -aam, along with a stable for horses, a Shiva temple and the Zanana Mahal. The place was also home to the famous poet Meerabai.

Meera Mandir: The Meera Temple, also known as the Meera Bai Temple, was a shrine to the Rajput princess Meera Bai and is situated on the grounds of Chittorgarh Fort. Maharana Kumbha, the Rajput ruler of the time, built the impressive temple, making it both a historical and religious landmark.

Vijaya Stambha: Located within the Chittorgarh Fort is the towering victorious monument known as the Vijaya Stambha. The tower was built as a mark of victory by the Hindu Rajput king Rana Kumbha of Mewar. He won the Battle of Sarangpur over the Malwa army led by Mahmud Khalji.
